advanced MIXing stage

After the initial mix is complete, it’s time to add (or subtract) things to make the mix SPECIAL. This is where detail, creativity, and technical know-how all come together.

Here’s a list of things we may do in the final mixing stage, depending on relevance:

  • Automation (volume, reverb, delay, FX)

  • Manual Pitch Correction (sometimes this is done in the initial mix)

  • Production “Moments” (Beat Drops, Tape Stops, etc)

  • Artificial Harmonies (sometimes this is done in the initial mix)

  • Transition Tightening

  • Mix Buss Processing (when needed)

GENRE-SPECIFIC TECHNIQUES

Different styles require different sounds. R&B/Soul and Pop music may require more focus on automated delays and reverbs to emphasize the emotional impact of the lyrics. Rap/Hip-Hop may rely on extra punch or grit as well as production tricks to keep the record exciting. Rock/Metal typically requires greater attention to tone and blend, as well as distortion - providing a mix that has a lot of texture without losing too much clarity in guitars and vocals.
